7 things I always had in my college room

Going to college is scary - leaving friends, family, and pets behind to sometimes move halfway across the country is difficult. When I first left my home town behind I was excited, but quickly discovered that college was going to be a whole lot more than reading textbooks and attending a few lectures.

The truth is, college completely turned my life upside down - I was suddenly left going solo on cooking, cleaning, and studying. To say I was left in shock is a little bit of an understatement - I spent a fair few nights hovering over student cookbooks only to end up ordering takeout.

There were, however, a few trusty items that made everything that little bit easier. Whether they were to make my accommodation feel more like back home or just to block out the noise of my flatmates partying at 2 am, they kept me sane.

I’m going to go through a few of them here in the hopes that they will help you just as much as they helped me through student life.

Kool 8 Water Bottle

As much as my mum begged me to remember to drink water when I left home for college, it’s easier said than done. College kitchens are a nightmare after all, so wading through the dirty plates and take out boxes to find the faucet was sometimes more effort than it was worth.

When I finally caved in to my dry mouth, I discovered the miracle that is the Kool8 Water Bottle.

Not only does it keep my water cool for 24 hours, but it also comes with a tea diffuser so my drinks will never be boring again.

Plus, when I wasn’t pouring over textbooks as a student, I was quite the eco-warrior - this bottle is the perfect alternative to a constant flow of harmful plastic versions.

Moneybox

We all know it’s hard to save during college when you’re living on your own for the first time and having to fend for yourself completely. I went through a particularly rough time working two evening jobs on top of studying 9 am - 5 pm every day, and it soon became very taxing.

During that time, I decided to purchase a money box to help me save up a little. Now, every time I have some spare change, I throw it into the jar to save for a rainy day (or just days when I don’t have enough money to buy dinner). It has completely changed the way I think about money.

Boise Noise Cancelation Headsets

I know I’m not going to be alone when I say I’m ALWAYS wearing earphones. Whether I’m trying to concentrate on my studying ahead of finals or just walking between classes, my Boise noise cancelation headset is in my ears. It has 11 levels of noise-canceling abilities, built-in Alexa capability, wireless phone syncing, and is super lightweight.

It’s also mentioned in GiftWit’s Gift Ideas For Him, so you know it’s going to be great. Next time you’re hitting the library or need to get an early night, this headset will become your best friend.

Twinkle in Time Star Map

While this item won’t help you pass or get you to your classes on time, it’s always been there to remind me of home. Twinkle in Time Star Maps are created to show exactly how the stars were aligned at a location and time of your choice.

My family gifted mine to me for my first college flat - they chose the time and place where I first found out I had been accepted into my first choice.

Not only is it super cute, but that little reminder of home kept me going through so many long weeks where I felt a little lost.

It looks amazing on my bedroom wall, and constantly gets people talking.

Light up alarm clock

Like many other students, I really struggled to get out of bed for classes during my time at college. Whether I’d been up all night bingeing my favorite shows or simply wasn’t looking forward to the day, departing from my duvet was always hard - until I discovered light-up alarm clocks. My Casper Glow Light cues my body for bed to ensure I get a long and deep sleep, then gently wakes me up in the morning with soft light. I particularly love using this clock during the dark winter months as it makes the room feel super cozy and fills the room with light. This clock charges quickly and wirelessly so that it’s always charged to wake me up in the morning and can be used as a torch for those midnight snack runs.

Poker Chips

I have to admit that I do enjoy a game of poker every now and again. After all, who would turn down the chance to win back their tuition fees or even just enough money to buy a round of drinks? Not only does owning poker chips automatically make you super cool to hang around with, but they’re also super satisfying to fiddle with.

Whenever I needed to concentrate during college, I’d practice shuffling my poker chips. It centers the mind and gives the fidgeters around us something to do. Check out this list of best poker chips to choose from.

Good luggage

The thing about college is you’re never really in the same place for very long. Whether I was going home to visit my parents, skipping across towns to see friends or moving accommodation, good luggage was an absolute must for me. I love my ‘Bigger Carry-On’ suitcase from Away Travel. Designed to last a lifetime, this case is super durable and will fit in the overhead bin of most airline carriers for trips away. Not only that, but this case comes with a charging port so no matter where I am, my phone is always fully charged. Cases from Away Travel come in a whole range of really cool colors.
