Curriculum Overview

Make Something G.R.E.A.T. is an evidence-based therapeutic recreation cooking curriculum grounded in the self-determination theory. Using the three components of the self-determination theory, this curriculum focuses on fostering autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This program will occur once a week for eight weeks, utilizing 60-minute sessions. These sessions will promote participants' autonomy, competence, and relatedness within the cooking group, increasing overall self-determination.

About the Curriculum Developer

Dani Stewart is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation in 2022, and graduated with her Master of Science in Therapeutic Recreation in 2023, from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She has prior experience working in community recreation through her internship and prior work, and with older adults through past work as a Nursing Assistant. Dani has a passion for community recreation, and working with adults with disabilities.

Assessment Description/Explanation

Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale (BPNSS)

The Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale (BPNSS) is an assessment tool that measures the degree to which people feel satisfied with the three components of the SDT: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. This scale has been adapted to fit the setting of a therapeutic cooking program instead of everyday life (adaptations have been approved by Deci, who created the scale). This assessment is a 21-item questionnaire that uses a 7-point Likert scale ranging from 1,
“not at all true” to 7, “very true”.

Perceived Competence Scale- Maintaining a Healthy Diet (PCS)

The Perceived Competence Scale (PCS) is an assessment tool that measures competence in a certain activity. The PCS assesses participants' feelings of competence in regard to taking a certain course, engaging in new behavior, or following through with some commitment. This form of the PCS is centered around maintaining a healthy diet. This assessment is a 4-item questionnaire that uses a 7-point Likert scale ranging from 1, “not at all true” to 7, “very true”.

Program Evaluation

Program Evaluation/Description

It is important to monitor this program in order to ensure success. A Program Evaluation Procedure Form is to be completed at most two weeks following the completion of this curriculum by the CTRS who ran the program. This evaluation form assists practitioners in determining whether the curriculum is being followed in the correct manner. If there are extreme differences between this fidelity manual and the Program Evaluation Procedure Form, then results may be skewed.
