Recording or Uploading Audio & Video for Your Canvas Class

Overview

In UWM's Canvas site, instructors have two options for uploading and recording audio/video: Canvas Media Recorder and My Media/Kaltura Capture. The following is a comparison of the two tools:

Canvas Media Recorder

The Canvas Media Recorder is a basic webcam/audio recorder that is built into the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE). Note that the RCE appears when you are editing/entering text in Canvas Pages, Discussions, Quizzes, Assignments, Announcements, Syllabus, and so on.

What Can You Do with the Canvas Media Recorder?

The Media Recorder can record webcam videos or audio.
You can also upload video and audio files to Canvas Media Recorder.

Note: The Media Recorder cannot record activity on your screen.

What Are the File Size Limits and Recording Time Limits?

Recordings made through Media Recorder should be short (under 10-15 minutes).
Audio/video files uploaded through the Media Recorder must be small (under 500 mb).

Do Media Recorder Recordings and Uploads Count Against Your Canvas Course Size Limit of 2 GB?

Files recorded or uploaded to the Media Recorder do not count against the size of your class.

Important: If you upload media files directly to the Canvas Files area instead of uploading the media files through the Canvas Media Recorder, the files will count against your course size.

How Do I Share the Media Recorder Files with My Class?

Files recorded/uploaded to the Media Recorder are only shared with the Canvas class. You cannot share the video to people outside the class unless you download the video and upload it elsewhere.
The Media Recorder video/audio will be embedded in the Canvas Page, Discussion, Announcement, Assignment, Quiz, etc. where you recorded/uploaded it.

How Does Canvas Media Recorder Handle Captions?

Canvas does not caption videos uploaded or recorded through the Media Recorder in the RCE. To add captions to videos, Instructors must manually create the captions in an external tool and then upload the captions (VTT file) through the Media Recorder in the RCE.

Where Are the Media Recorder Files Stored and Can They Be Downloaded?

Recorded files are stored in the course Files area in the Uploaded Media folder.
Files can be downloaded from Canvas.

Recording Media using the Rich Content Editor

My Media

My Media is a streaming server that is integrated with Canvas - it's a bit like YouTube for UWM videos. Instructors can upload large audio and video files to My Media. They can also use My Media's recorder, Kaltura Capture, to record video, audio, and screencasts. When you record video/audio with Kaltura Capture, the file is automatically saved in your private My Media storage area. Once the file has been saved in your private My Media storage area, you can embed the video in a Canvas Page, Discussion, Announcement, Quiz, Assignment, or Syllabus to share with your class.

Each instructor has a private My Media area where their videos are stored.

To share a video, you can embed it in a Canvas page, discussion, announcement, assignment, or quiz.

What Can You Do with My Media's Recorder (Kaltura Capture)?

Kaltura Capture can record webcam videos or audio.
Kaltura Capture can record activity on the screen.
You can upload video and audio files up to 2 GB in size to My Media

Where Can I Access My Media and the Kaltura Capture Recorder?

To access your private My Media files area, go to Canvas, click your account icon on the top left of the page and then select My Media.

Once you are in your My Media account, you can do the following:

Upload audio/video files to your My Media account by clicking the Add New button and selecting Media Upload.
Record a video with Kaltura Capture by clicking the Add New button and selecting Kaltura Capture.

To record and upload additional files. Once you are in your My Media account, click the Add New button and select Kaltura Capture.

What Is the Recording/Uploading and Sharing Process for My Media?

Share the video with students in a Canvas class by Embedding a My Media Video in a Canvas Page
Share the video with people outside UWM by copying and sharing your My Media video's Share link

4. Edit the video's machine-generated captions, as necessary.

What Are the File Size Limits and Recording Time Limits?

There is no specific limit for Kaltura Capture recordings, but you might experience issues recording videos over 15 minutes.
Audio/video files uploaded to My Media can be up to 2 GB.
There is no limit to the number of videos and total size of all videos in your My Media account.

Do My Media Recordings and Uploads Count Against Your Canvas Course Size Limit of 2 GB?

No, when My Media videos are embedded in your Canvas course, it does not count against the size of your class.

How Do I Share My Media Files with My Class?

Files recorded/uploaded to My Media are stored in your private area of My Media. To share My Media video/audio files with your class, you can embed the videos in Canvas Pages, Discussions, Announcements, Assignments, Quizzes, and more.
Unlike the Canvas RCE Media Recorder, your My Media files are not tied to a class and can be embedded in multiple classes across multiple semesters.
You can copy a My Media file's share link to share the video with people outside Canvas.

How does My Media Handle Captions?

When you upload a video to My Media, machine-generated captions are automatically generated.
You can edit the machine-generated captions in My Media.

Captions & Editing Captions

Overview

When you upload a video to My Media, machine-generated captions are automatically generated, and you can also edit the captions in My Media.
Canvas does not caption videos uploaded or recorded through the Media Recorder in the RCE. To add captions to Media Recorder videos, instructors must manually create the captions in an external tool and then upload the captions (SRT or VTT file) through the Media Recorder in the RCE.

Downloading Zoom Recordings & Uploading to Permanent Video Storage

Overview

When you record a Zoom meeting to the cloud, the meeting recording is deleted from the cloud after 180 days. If you want to keep the recording, you must download the recording to your computer and then upload it to a streaming server like MyMedia or OneDrive.

Procedures

See the Zoom Resources Class for instructions on downloading Zoom cloud recordings and uploading the files to My Media.

Tip - Once you upload a video to My Media, you can embed the video in a Canvas Page, Announcement, Discussion, etc. to share with your class.
