Why consult the Faculty Handbook:

The Faculty Handbook is a good place to familiarize yourself with the faculty governance policies. The handbook spells out a series of highly relevant policies for faculty and instructional academic staff Perhaps most importantly, this includes UW-Green Bay's policy for retention and promotion reviews. However, it also can provide you insight into important policies, such as how instructors can gain faculty status or who has the right to vote on specific issues. It's not an 'exciting' read, so by no means do we encourage you to sit down and read it all, but it's nice to know where it is when you have specific questions. The handbook allows for some interpretation at the unit-level, so you may wish to talk to your chair or mentor about any questions you have about policies that relate to your position.

The person in charge of maintaining and explaining the Faculty Handbook is Steve Meyers, our faithful Secretary of the Faculty and Academic Staff. You should also consider asking your unit chair about any questions you may have, as units have unique cultures that inform how they engage with the handbook.

A few years ago, the university created a joint employee handbook for academic and university staff following changes in labor laws in Wisconsin. Instructional Academic Staff often find themselves in a liminal place between staff and faculty. In this handbook you will find policies about academic staff review, but note that units can vote for instructional academic staff to be evaluated using policies laid out in the faculty handbook. Our best advice to you is to ask your mentor and department chair what policy you unit follows.
